Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government has decided to provide free education to women up to the honours level to expand educational opportunities for women.
The government will bear all related expenses, while scholarships will also be provided to female students who achieve good academic results.
He made the remarks on Sunday (August 16) while releasing fish fry into the Old Brahmaputra River at the Mirzapur Chairman Bari Ghat area in Pakundia, Kishoreganj, as part of National Fisheries Week 2026.
He also distributed fish fry among local fishermen and exchanged greetings with residents.
The prime minister said former prime minister Khaleda Zia had made women’s education free up to the intermediate level during her tenure.
“Women make up half of the country’s population. If we leave women behind, it will not be possible to take the country forward. That is why the government has decided to make education free for women up to the honours level. The government will bear all the expenses,” he said.
He urged female students to study attentively and prepare themselves to take responsibility for the country in the future. He also announced scholarships for girls who achieve good results.
Tarique Rahman further said the government plans to provide school uniforms once a year to children from poor families studying in primary schools across the country.
In addition to new textbooks, the government also plans to provide school bags and uniforms to around 12 million children every year.
Emphasising women’s economic empowerment, he said the government wanted to help women become self-reliant alongside expanding their access to education.
Referring to the Family Card programme, the prime minister said the government had pledged before the election to gradually provide Family Cards to women who head households and manage their families among the country’s 40 million households.
He expressed hope that the Family Card would reach every household across the country gradually over the next five years.
