Police detained one person after activists of the banned Awami League affiliate Swechhasebak League staged a sudden procession in Uttara, Dhaka, on Friday morning.
The procession, organised under the banner of Dhaka North Swechhasebak League, began from Uttara Jasim Uddin on the Airport Road and proceeded towards the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-1) office at around 7:45am.
Police and local residents chased the processionists, causing them to scatter and flee. One person was detained from the scene, said Morshed Alam, officer-in-charge of Uttara East Police Station.
He said police chased the participants and detained one person along with the banner. His identity was being verified.
The Awami League’s activities have been banned since the interim government took office following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, amid a mass uprising.
Many senior Awami League leaders and former ministers have since been arrested, while most of the remaining senior leaders are in hiding.
Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders are facing trial over alleged crimes against humanity during the 2024 uprising. The party’s activities remain banned pending the completion of the trials.
Despite the ban, sudden processions by Awami League activists are occasionally reported in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country, with police often reporting arrests following such rallies.
