The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called a meeting of its highest policymaking body, the National Standing Committee, for Saturday night.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at the BNP chairman’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on September 12. The party recently inducted four new members into the committee.

According to party sources, this will be the BNP’s third Standing Committee meeting since it came to power. It will also be the first meeting attended by the four newly appointed members—Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Aman Ullah Aman, Prof Dr Farhad Halim Donar and Ismail Zabihullah.

The meeting is expected to discuss the upcoming local government elections, the overall situation in the country and other important political issues.

BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan said he had heard that the Standing Committee meeting was scheduled for Saturday.

Party sources said the decision to hold the meeting on Saturday indicates that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not attend the outreach session of the BRICS summit in India.

The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Leaders of BRICS member states, along with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, are expected to attend the summit.

India is chairing BRICS in 2026, with this year’s summit scheduled to take place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
