Students’ Federation displays Ghulam Azam ‘shoe-beating’ photo in protest

The Bangladesh Students’ Federation has displayed a photograph depicting the late Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ghulam Azam being beaten with shoes at the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) museum, in protest against the display of photographs of Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The photograph was put up at the museum after three pictures of Jinnah were added to the collection during its recent renovation.

At the same time, photographs of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman that had previously been displayed at the museum were removed.

The Students’ Federation said the move was intended to protest what it described as a one-sided presentation of history at the DUCSU museum.

The group also criticised the display of Jinnah’s photographs at a university museum associated with Bangladesh’s history and the Liberation War.

The controversy comes amid growing criticism from student organisations over the recent changes to the DUCSU museum.

Another student reportedly tore down one of Jinnah’s photographs, while the Bangladesh Chhatra Dal accused the DUCSU leadership of promoting “Pakistan love”.

The issue has triggered a wider debate over how Bangladesh’s Liberation War, political history and historical figures should be represented in the DUCSU museum.
