Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has said the 11-party alliance’s Dhaka-Rangpur long march on September 19 will be peaceful and orderly, stressing that they do not want any disorder during the programme.
Speaking at a press briefing after a meeting of the alliance’s top leaders at the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition on Thursday, Porwar urged the government, police, civil administration, traffic authorities and intelligence agencies to cooperate with the programme.
“Our programme will be non-violent and orderly. There is no plan for instability, disorder or vandalism among the 11 parties,” he said.
He also urged anyone who might seek to disrupt the programme to refrain from such attempts, saying the alliance would not allow unnecessary disorder.
The long march will begin with a rally at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka at 7am on September 19 and start towards Rangpur at 8am. The route will include roadside rallies in Gazipur, Tangail, Sirajganj, Bogura and Gaibandha before ending at Rangpur Zila School ground.
Porwar said participants would travel in an organised convoy with volunteers, security personnel, medical teams, ambulances, IT and media teams, as well as a cultural group.
He said the alliance had informed district administrations and police superintendents along the route in writing and sought their cooperation.
The Jamaat leader also criticised the government over what he described as a political crisis stemming from the rejection of the referendum verdict. He urged the government not to use its parliamentary majority against what he called the people’s wishes.
The 11-party alliance is campaigning on demands including implementation of the referendum verdict, justice for the July killings, improvements in law and order, resolution of power, fuel and fertiliser shortages, control of commodity prices, and an end to corruption, extortion, land grabbing and politicisation.
Porwar said participants should bring their own dry food, water and medicines because no food arrangements would be available along the route.
