The eight-point demand of the 11-party opposition alliance’s long march could turn into a single-point demand at any time, Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman warned the government on Saturday.
“The opposition’s eight-point demand could become nine or 10 points. Again, in the interest of the nation, it could turn into a single-point demand at any time,” he said.
Shafiqur Rahman made the remarks at the inaugural rally of the Rangpur-bound long march at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka on Saturday morning.
He warned that the situation could become “very serious” if the opposition’s eight-point demand turns into a single-point demand. He urged the government to learn from the recent past and accept the people’s demands before facing such a situation.
“If the government fails to meet the demands, intimidation will not work. The opposition will not back down from anything,” he said.
The opposition leader also said some people had become agitated following the success of the Chattogram-bound long march. He urged them not to lose their temper out of frustration but to accept the people’s demands.
Shafiqur Rahman said the opposition was not protesting over any party-specific demand.
“We have taken to the streets with the demands of 180 million people. Today, 180 million people are with the 11-party alliance. We will return home only after securing those demands, Insha Allah,” he said.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said the long march had created a nationwide wave and that people associated with the government were therefore making various remarks. He said the opposition’s long march would remain peaceful.
Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad also said the long march would be peaceful and that their movement and struggle would continue until the demands were met.
The inaugural rally was also addressed by Opposition Chief Whip and NCP Convener Nahid Islam, LDP President Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque, Jamaat’s Dhaka South City unit Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, Central Executive Council member Saiful Alam Khan Milon, AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Manju and Bangladesh Development Party Chairman Anwarul Islam.
