Leaders of seven Qawmi-based Islamist political parties have taken another step towards forming a united platform, with a liaison committee formed to coordinate the process.
The development came at a meeting held on Sunday at Jamiya Azizul Uloom Babunagar Madrasa in Fatikchhari, Chattogram, chaired by Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Ameer Muhibbullah Babunagari. Representatives of the seven parties attended the meeting.
The seven parties are Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, Khelafat Majlis, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Islami Oikya Jote and Bangladesh Nizam-e-Islam Party.
A liaison committee has been formed with Hefazat Secretary General Sajidur Rahman as its convener.
Three representatives from each of the seven parties, along with two senior Hefazat leaders, have been included in the committee.
The committee members are expected to hold a meeting in Dhaka on October 22 to take a final decision on the unity process, according to a Hefazat statement.
However, reports said the parties did not reach consensus on all issues, including the structure of the proposed alliance, joint activities and its future political course.
Differences also remain over relations with other political alliances, including the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance.
Hefazat said the initiative aims to strengthen cooperation among the Qawmi-based parties and present their religious positions more effectively through a coordinated effort.
