Muslim nationalism will emerge as the dominant political trend in Bangladesh amid the ongoing conflict among different civilisations and ideologies worldwide, speakers at a programme marking the second anniversary of the Revolutionary Chhatra Parishad said on Tuesday.
The Muslim nationalist student organisation held a doa mahfil and discussion at the Dhaka University Central Mosque to mark its founding anniversary.
The speakers said the Revolutionary Chhatra Parishad emerged from Dhaka University shortly after the July 2024 uprising and called for banning what it described as “Awami fascist politics”, restoring the “Israel-except” restriction on Bangladeshi passports and launching a movement against what it termed Indian and Israeli dominance in Bangladesh’s politics.
They claimed that the success of those initiatives had contributed to the growing influence of Muslim nationalist politics in the country.
The doa mahfil was chaired by the organisation’s convener, Abdul Wahed, who outlined its activities over the past two years.
He said the organisation’s main objective was to build the student community around the ideals and ethics of Muslim identity-based politics.
He also said the Revolutionary Chhatra Parishad was moving forward by drawing on the liberation struggles of 1947, 1971 and 2024.
“The main foundation of our state and people is Bangladeshi Muslim identity,” he said, explaining that the identity meant being followers of Islam, speaking Bangla and having their lives rooted in the land of Bengal.
Khomeni Ehsan, convener of the National Revolutionary Council, said it was important for Bangladesh to develop politics based on its own religious, cultural and historical identity amid the ongoing global civilisational conflict.
He said the future of national politics would have to be shaped by the beliefs and values of the majority of the country’s people to cope with pressure from the international environment.
Senior Khatib of Dhaka University Central Mosque Hafez Maulana Najib Mahmud conducted the doa.
National Revolutionary Council member secretary Dr Nabil Ahmad and assistant member secretary Abdus Salam, Shah Nazmul Hasan Ferdous of Nawab Salimullah Academy, Dhaka University unit member secretary of the Revolutionary Chhatra Parishad Muhib Khan, central assistant member secretary Jihadi Ehsan, Md Ariful Islam and Md Shafiqul Rahman, among others, attended the programme.
