Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has claimed that the political situation in the state has become so tense that she can no longer leave her home freely.
She made the remarks while attending an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, according to NDTV.
Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of pursuing what she described as “anarchy” and “authoritarian rule” following its victory in the West Bengal Assembly election. She also alleged that political tensions remained high and that Trinamool leaders were being targeted.
The Trinamool has alleged that recent protests and attacks against its leaders were orchestrated by the BJP, while the BJP has described them as an expression of public anger against the party.
One recent incident involved Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh, whose vehicle was attacked with eggs and stones by protesters in Hooghly last week.
At the INDIA bloc meeting, Banerjee also criticised Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. She referred to Kumar as “Vanish Kumar” and accused the poll panel of removing voters’ names from electoral rolls. Her remarks echo her earlier demand for action against the CEC over the SIR exercise.
More than 20 opposition parties gathered in New Delhi to discuss a joint strategy on the Election Commission and the SIR process. The opposition has demanded action against Kumar amid controversy over the electoral-roll revision.
The Election Commission, however, has maintained that internal differences and discussions among commissioners are part of the institutional process and that final decisions on the SIR were taken through the prescribed procedure.
