Indian actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty, best known for playing the popular on-screen character “Minister Fatakesto”, has been appointed adviser to West Bengal’s Information and Cultural Affairs Department with the rank of a cabinet minister.
The state government issued an order on Wednesday, making the appointment effective immediately and until further orders. However, his specific responsibilities as adviser have not yet been detailed.
West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari, who currently oversees the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, had earlier hinted at giving Mithun a bigger role.
Mithun has been involved in several cultural and political events under the BJP-led government.
He is also the chief adviser to the committee of the Kolkata International Film Festival, scheduled to begin on December 16.
The actor played the title character in the 2007 film Minister Fatakesto, portraying a tough and outspoken minister.
The character became popular among audiences in both West Bengal and Bangladesh.
Mithun joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election. Before that, he had served as a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member before resigning from the post in 2016.
