Bangladeshi expatriates confronted former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport, accusing him of killing thousands of children and police officers and undermining democracy in Bangladesh.

The incident took place on Monday (October 12), after Yunus arrived at the airport from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight.

According to a video circulating on social media, several people questioned Yunus about his visit to the United States and raised allegations concerning arrests in Bangladesh, the killing of police personnel and the destruction of democracy.

One man was heard repeatedly asking Yunus why he had come to the United States, saying, “You are a terrorist. You have killed people in Bangladesh. Why have you come here? Tell us why you are here.”

The man also alleged that 200,000 people had been arrested in Bangladesh and thousands of police officers killed.

He further accused Yunus of destroying democracy in the country.

However, the identities of the expatriates involved and the full details of the incident could not be independently confirmed.

No statement from Yunus or his representatives was available regarding the incident.

Yunus took charge as chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government on August 8, 2024, following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government amid a mass uprising.
