Supporters of two rival factions of the BNP clashed in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur on Friday evening following a dispute over local dominance, leaving two vehicles, including one belonging to Jamalpur-2 lawmaker Sultan Mahmud Babu, vandalised.

The incident took place at the Dak Bungalow premises in Islampur.

According to local sources, tensions first flared earlier in the day during a programme at a college in Malamganj, where supporters of Jamalpur-2 MP and Islampur Upazila BNP President Sultan Mahmud Babu and Upazila BNP General Secretary Nurul Islam Nawab became involved in a heated argument.

The confrontation later escalated into a clash when supporters of the two groups gathered at the Dak Bungalow in the afternoon. Both sides reportedly chased each other, and two vehicles—one belonging to the MP and another linked to the rival faction—were vandalised during the violence.

Police from Islampur Police Station rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Additional police personnel have since been deployed in the Dak Bungalow area to prevent further unrest.

Officer-in-Charge of Islampur Police Station Mizanur Rahman said no casualties were reported in the incident.

“Two vehicles, including the one belonging to the Jamalpur-2 MP, were vandalised. The situation is now under control, and legal action will be taken over the incident,” he said.
