DHAKA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has accused the BNP of betraying the nation over implementation of the July Charter and pushing opposition parties towards a fresh movement.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion titled “One Year of the July Charter: A Review of Promises and Expectations”, organised by the Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party in Dhaka on Sunday.
“The party has forgotten its past overnight. By betraying the nation over implementation of the July Charter, the BNP itself has pushed opposition parties towards a movement,” Shafiqur Rahman said.
He alleged that although 148 lawmakers from the ruling party had been given special allocations, opposition MPs were being deprived of similar benefits. He also accused the government of interfering in constitutional institutions.
Leaders of the 11-party alliance alleged that the BNP was running the country by sidelining reforms and compromising with hegemonic forces.
The discussion was held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium to mark the first anniversary of the signing of the July Charter. Senior leaders of the 11-party alliance attended the event.
Speaking at the discussion, National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah alleged that the BNP had violated 17 provisions in the name of implementing the July Charter.
He also alleged that Salahuddin Ahmed had put BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman in an unfit vehicle.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Oli Ahmed accused the BNP of running the state with incompetent people.
Khelafat Majlish Ameer Mamunul Haque urged Islamic scholars not to help implement the government’s agenda.
AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju alleged that the BNP had backtracked on its commitments under the 31-point reform proposal. He also accused the government of failing to control commodity prices and resolve the energy crisis.
The speakers called for implementing the July Charter to build a united Bangladesh rather than deepen divisions within the nation.
