Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday met leaders of allied political parties and alliances that took part in the joint anti-government movement for a dinner and exchange of greetings, marking the first such gathering since his government assumed office five months ago.
Speaking to reporters after the dinner at the State Guest House Jamuna, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir described the meeting as the beginning of a new chapter in Bangladesh’s democratic journey and state reform process.
He said the meeting with the top leaders of allied parties was highly significant, as it brought together political forces that had stood united throughout the 15- to 16-year movement.
In a cordial atmosphere, the prime minister exchanged views with the alliance leaders, thanked them for their support during the election, and briefed them on the government’s development initiatives.
At the outset of the briefing, Fakhrul paid tribute to those who were killed during the July 2024 student-led mass uprising, saying their sacrifices created the opportunity to end authoritarian rule and restore a democratic environment in the country.
He also acknowledged the contributions of those who were injured or permanently disabled during the movement.
Highlighting the government’s performance over the past five months, Fakhrul said the administration has prioritised public welfare.
At its first cabinet meeting, the government approved the waiver of agricultural loans of up to Tk10,000, including interest.
It has also launched the distribution of Family Cards and Farmer Cards, introduced allowances for imams, priests and fathers serving religious institutions, initiated stipends for athletes, and begun implementing canal excavation projects.
He said the government inherited a collapsed state and economic structure and has already begun rebuilding key institutions, including the banking sector, with efforts underway to restore them gradually to normal functioning.
On state reforms, Fakhrul said the government is committed to implementing the 31-point reform agenda, announced during the joint movement, in letter and spirit.
He added that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also pledged to fully implement the July Charter, which was signed with the consensus of all political parties.
Fakhrul further said the prime minister would continue to hold regular meetings and consultations with leaders of allied political parties and alliances to preserve national unity, advance the state reform process, and strengthen coordination on key political issues.
