BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Political Adviser to the Prime Minister Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday said the party’s highest policymaking body will decide who will be Bangladesh’s next President following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin.
“The decision on who will be the next President will be taken at the party’s highest level. The party’s final decision will be communicated to the nation in due course,” Rizvi told reporters after paying tribute at the graves of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.
Rizvi laid wreaths and offered prayers at the graves, accompanied by 12 officials who were recently appointed on contractual terms to various government institutions.
Commenting on Shahabuddin’s resignation, Rizvi said the former President had stepped down citing health reasons.
“He has resigned citing his physical condition, and we would like to believe that,” he said.
However, Rizvi noted that several political parties have demanded legal action against the former President.
“The BNP’s policymaking forum will discuss the matter later and take a final decision in this regard,” he added.
Referring to the newly appointed officials, Rizvi said they had long been associated with the BNP and had made significant contributions and sacrifices during the party’s political struggles.
“Those who have been entrusted with responsibilities in different government agencies have been involved in BNP politics for a long time. These appointments recognise the sacrifices made by the party’s leaders and activists during the recent movement,” he said.
Expressing confidence in the appointees, Rizvi said they would uphold their principles and discharge their responsibilities with integrity.
“We firmly believe that those who have been given responsibilities today will never compromise their principles or bow their heads under any circumstances,” he said.
Praising the leadership of Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman, Rizvi said the government had undertaken a wide range of welfare initiatives over the past four months and was working to fulfil its commitments.
“In the past four months, the Prime Minister and his government have undertaken numerous social welfare initiatives and are working tirelessly to implement every promise,” he added.
