Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday to book their place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup.

The Swiss will face the winners of Friday’s Round of 32 clash between Colombia and Ghana.

Johan Manzambi starred in the opening goal, bursting down the left flank before delivering a cross for Breel Embolo, who tapped home to give Switzerland the lead.

Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage in the second half, firing through a crowded penalty area. Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane got a hand to the shot but could not prevent it from finding the net.

Switzerland controlled much of the contest, while Algeria struggled to create clear-cut chances on a disappointing night for the North African side.

With the defeat, Algeria joined Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Senegal as African teams eliminated in the Round of 32. Morocco remain the only African nation to have reached the last 16.
