Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan became the first Bangladeshi to score a Test century in Australia as Bangladesh took a first-innings lead during the second session on the second day of the first Test against Australia in Darwin on Friday.
The left-hander reached his maiden Test hundred with a single off spinner Nathan Lyon through mid-off, marking a historic milestone for Bangladesh cricket.
However, Tanzid fell soon after reaching the landmark while attempting an attacking shot against Lyon. He was caught by Mitchell Starc at long-off after scoring 101 off an innings featuring eight fours and a six.
At the time of filing this report, Bangladesh were 231 for three in 65.3 overs, leading Australia by 33 runs after trailing by 102 runs at the start of the second day.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also completed his half-century as the visitors strengthened their position in the first innings.
Playing only his second Test, Tanzid became the first Bangladeshi to score a Test hundred in Australia. He is also the second Bangladeshi overall to register an international century in the country, after Mahmudullah, who scored a hundred during the 2015 World Cup.
Tanzid had resumed the day on 32 and completed his half-century during the first session. He and Mominul Haque provided Bangladesh with a solid foundation, adding 102 runs before Mominul was dismissed for 49.
Mominul appeared set for a half-century but lost concentration and edged a Josh Hazlewood delivery behind the wicket.
Tanzid also survived a couple of close calls during his innings. He was dropped by Lyon before opening his account on the first evening and received another reprieve on 62 when an attempted cut off Lyon resulted in a chance that went begging in the slips.
Despite those moments, Tanzid went on to convert his start into a memorable century and etch his name into Bangladesh cricket history.
