Bangladesh fast bowler Shoriful Islam produced a career-best bowling performance to keep his side alive on the opening day of the second Test against Australia in Mackay on Saturday.
Returning from injury, the left-arm pacer claimed six wickets for 34 runs, completing his maiden Test five-wicket haul in just 8.5 overs. His previous best in Tests was 3-28, while his best match figures were 5-56.
Shoriful also recorded the second-fastest five-wicket haul by a Bangladeshi bowler in Test cricket. Taijul Islam holds the record after taking five wickets in just 6.5 overs against the West Indies in Chattogram in 2018.
Shoriful’s six wickets included Australia’s Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. His haul accounted for six of Australia’s first eight wickets.
Earlier, Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64, with Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc claiming six wickets.
Taskin Ahmed provided the first breakthrough for Bangladesh, before Shoriful struck twice in the same over to dismiss Head and Labuschagne.
Bangladesh ended the opening day under pressure but with renewed hope after Shoriful’s outstanding spell put Australia on the back foot.
