The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced a special tribute to Lionel Messi following his decision to retire from international football.
As part of the tribute, matches in domestic men’s and women’s competitions at all levels in Argentina will be stopped for one minute during the 10th minute of the first half, allowing players and spectators to applaud Messi.
ESPN reported the AFA’s decision, citing a statement from the association.
“In recognition of Lionel Messi’s career with the Argentina national team, all upcoming matches in men’s and women’s competitions, across all divisions and levels, will be stopped for one minute in the 10th minute of the first half for applause,” the AFA said.
The association has also instructed stadiums equipped with video boards to show a special tribute video dedicated to Messi before matches begin.
Messi announced his decision to retire from international football in a three-page written message posted on Instagram on August 31.
“After the final, some time has passed, and after much thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the national team,” Messi wrote.
The 2026 World Cup final against Spain was his final appearance in an Argentina shirt.
The 39-year-old forward began his international career on August 17, 2005. He has scored 125 goals for Argentina, making him the country’s all-time leading scorer.
The biggest achievement of Messi’s international career came at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he led Argentina to the title. He also holds the record for the most World Cup appearances, with 34 matches, and the most victories, with 23.
In his farewell message, Messi reflected on the exhaustion and satisfaction of his two-decade international career.
“I gave everything I had… I completely emptied myself; there is nothing left inside me,” he wrote at the beginning of his message.
He also expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, coaching staff and officials for their support throughout his 20 years with the national team.
“Thank you for all the love during these 20 years,” Messi wrote.
Concluding his message with his trademark Argentine passion, Messi said: “Thank God for making me Argentine!! Vamos Argentina.”
