Lionel Messi was denied a winning return for Inter Miami after announcing his retirement from the Argentina national team, as Miami were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Atlanta United.
The match at Nu Stadium started nearly 90 minutes late due to thunderstorms.
Miami took the lead in the 32nd minute when Casemiro scored from a corner delivered by Messi. Atlanta levelled three minutes later through Miguel Almiron.
Luis Suarez restored Miami’s lead before the break with a superb finish.
Atlanta were awarded two penalties in the second half. Miami goalkeeper Dane St Clair saved the first, but Breel Embolo converted the second to make it 2-2.
Messi had two late chances to score the winner but failed to convert either, leaving the match level.
The draw took Inter Miami to 43 points, 10 behind leaders Nashville.
