Lionel Messi has been named among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, just days after announcing his retirement from international football with Argentina.

The 39-year-old Argentine superstar, who has won the prestigious award a record eight times, is now in contention for a ninth title.

He returns to the shortlist for the first time since 2023.

Messi’s nomination comes after an impressive 2026 season.

He helped Argentina reach the World Cup final and also enjoyed a strong campaign with Inter Miami. He contributed to 75 goals in 49 appearances for club and country, according to Reuters.

Messi’s Argentina teammate Lautaro Martínez has also been nominated.

Other leading contenders include defending champion Ousmane Dembélé, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal and Rodri.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held in London on October 26.
