Bangladesh all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz marked his Caribbean Premier League debut in style, taking three wickets for just 13 runs as Guyana Amazon Warriors beat St Lucia Kings by four wickets in Providence.
Batting first, St Lucia Kings were bowled out for 119, with veteran leg-spinner and Guyana captain Imran Tahir leading the attack. The 47-year-old took five wickets for 17 runs in four overs, while Miraz provided effective support with his off-spin.
Miraz claimed his first wicket in his debut over, dismissing John Campbell with a catch at long-off off the final delivery of the seventh over. He returned in his third over to remove Kemol Savory lbw and Charith Asalanka, who was caught by Shai Hope.
There was some controversy over Savory’s dismissal, however, as replays suggested the delivery would have missed the stumps. A review could potentially have overturned the decision.
Chasing 120, Guyana also faced some pressure before reaching the target at 18.3 overs after losing six wickets. Miraz had a disappointing outing with the bat, scoring just one run.
Miraz joined Guyana Amazon Warriors late in the CPL season as a replacement for Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi, who left the tournament to join his national team for the T20I series against India.
Tahir, who was named Player of the Match, praised Miraz after the game.
“We had Nabi, a very high-quality bowler and our best bowler. Miraz came in and bowled really well, just as we expected. It is great to have him. Miraz is a world-class bowler who has been performing at the international level around the world,” Tahir said.
