Bangladesh midfielder Hamza Choudhury says the team are not afraid of stronger opponents and are determined to gain valuable experience at the FIFA ASEAN Cup in Jakarta.
The tournament’s Division 1 matches begin on Thursday, while Bangladesh will start their campaign on Friday. Hamza said playing against higher-ranked teams is a major opportunity for Bangladesh to test themselves at the international level.
“We are not here to be afraid of anyone. We know what our capabilities are. Inshallah, this will be a learning opportunity for us,” Hamza told reporters in Jakarta on Thursday. “We are here to gain as much experience as possible and hopefully make our country proud.”
The midfielder said he was happy with the hospitality and facilities in Indonesia, praising the friendly locals and the popularity of football in the country.
“The people here are very friendly and kind. Football is hugely popular here and the facilities are very good. I am looking forward to playing on Friday,” he said.
Hamza also praised Indonesia, Bangladesh’s opponents, describing them as a strong side with quality players and a good head coach. He said he would be surprised if Indonesia were not in contention for a place at the next World Cup.
Hamza also met Indonesia international Elkan Baggott, who plays for English Championship club Millwall, on the flight to Jakarta. He said he was looking forward to facing the young defender in the tournament.
Pleased with Bangladesh’s training arrangements, Hamza said the practice pitches and hotel facilities had been excellent.
“We are enjoying the facilities and the time here,” he said.
For Hamza, however, the tournament is about more than results. He sees the matches against strong opposition as an opportunity for Bangladesh’s players to assess themselves at the international level and gain valuable experience.
