Morocco booked their place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey on Monday.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as Morocco’s hero, producing a decisive save to deny Crysencio Summerville with the Netherlands’ fifth penalty before Ismael Saibari calmly blasted home the winning spot-kick to send the Atlas Lions through.
Morocco will now face Canada in the round of 16 in Houston on Saturday after surviving an enthralling contest that swung dramatically in the closing moments of regulation time.
The North Africans snatched an equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time through defender Issa Diop, whose glancing header cancelled out Cody Gakpo’s second-half opener and forced extra time.
The Netherlands had looked on course for victory after Gakpo broke the deadlock midway through the second half in an emotionally charged moment. The Liverpool forward, playing just days after he and his partner confirmed the loss of their unborn child, collapsed to the ground after scoring as teammates gathered around him in a lengthy embrace. However, Morocco refused to surrender. Substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered a precise cross into the box, where an unmarked Diop rose to head past Bart Verbruggen and send the match into extra time.
The Atlas Lions were arguably the better side over the course of the contest, creating more clear-cut opportunities despite a fiercely contested encounter marked by physical challenges and frequent interruptions.
Morocco nearly opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Neil El Aynaoui directed Achraf Hakimi’s corner toward goal, but Verbruggen reacted brilliantly to keep it out. Moments later, the Dutch goalkeeper again came to his side’s rescue by tipping Hakimi’s powerful long-range effort over the crossbar.
The physical nature of the match was evident throughout the opening half. Saibari escaped punishment after appearing to catch Jan Paul van Hecke with an elbow, while Van Hecke later required treatment for a bloodied head before returning to make a series of robust challenges.
Despite dominating possession for long spells, the Netherlands struggled to create meaningful chances. Their best first-half opportunity came just before the interval when Micky van de Ven unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area that Bounou brilliantly pushed over the bar.
Morocco also threatened before halftime, with Saibari narrowly failing to connect with a dangerous cross that flashed across the face of goal.
The second half continued at a frantic pace before Dutch coach Ronald Koeman made a series of substitutions following the hydration break, introducing striker Wout Weghorst.
The move paid immediate dividends. Weghorst flicked on a long pass to release Summerville down the flank, and the winger delivered a cross that Gakpo met with a diving finish to give the Dutch the lead.
Backed by the commanding defensive display of captain Virgil van Dijk, the Netherlands appeared to have done enough to secure victory. But Morocco struck at the death through Diop’s header, stunning the Dutch and their supporters.
Extra time produced more drama as Morocco pushed relentlessly for a winner. In the 96th minute, Soufiane Rahimi raced clear on goal only for Verbruggen to produce a remarkable one-on-one save to keep the Netherlands alive. With neither side able to find another breakthrough, the tie was settled from the penalty spot.
Although El Aynaoui struck the crossbar with Morocco’s opening penalty, Bounou’s heroics kept his team in contention. The experienced goalkeeper saved Summerville’s decisive attempt before Saibari confidently converted the winning kick, sealing a memorable victory and extending Morocco’s impressive World Cup campaign. The result ends the Netherlands’ tournament, while Morocco advance to the knockout stage brimming with confidence as they prepare for a last-16 showdown against Canada.
