Sri Lanka produced a historic performance to defeat England by two wickets after successfully chasing a mammoth target of 430 runs in a thrilling one-day international (ODI) match in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on Thursday.
The victory marked the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.
Batting first, England posted a formidable 429-4 in 50 overs, powered by captain Harry Brook’s sensational 202 off 116 balls.
His innings included 21 fours and 10 sixes, making it the fastest double century in ODI cricket.
In reply, Sri Lanka overcame an early setback to reach 430-8 in 49.5 overs, sealing an extraordinary victory with one ball to spare.
Pavan Rathnayake led the charge with a brilliant 130 off 106 balls, while Avishka Fernando scored 97 off 83 deliveries.
Dasun Shanaka also struck 97 off just 50 balls to keep Sri Lanka in contention.
Janith Liyanage delivered the decisive contribution at the end, remaining unbeaten on 61 off 27 balls.
He sealed the win with a six in the penultimate delivery after England threatened to turn the match around in the final over.
The result surpassed India’s previous successful ODI chase of 406 runs, while South Africa’s record chase of 438 against Australia in 2006 remains the highest in the format.
Despite Brook’s remarkable double century and England’s imposing total, their bowlers could not prevent Sri Lanka from completing one of the most memorable run chases in ODI cricket.
