FIFA has announced a record $655 million prize fund for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a 50% increase from the prize money awarded at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

According to The Athletic, the winners of Sunday’s final between Spain and Argentina will receive a record $50 million, while the runners-up will earn $33 million.

The third-placed team will receive $29 million, with the fourth-placed side taking home $27 million.

The four quarter-finalists will each earn $19 million, while teams eliminated in the Round of 16 will receive $15 million each. Nations exiting in the Round of 32 will collect $11 million apiece.

All 48 participating teams were guaranteed at least $10.5 million, including $9 million for competing in the group stage and an additional $1.5 million in preparation funding.

The prize money will be paid to each national football association, which will determine how much is distributed to players and coaching staff.

The remaining funds are generally allocated to football development programmes.

FIFA has projected the expanded 48-team World Cup to generate more than $10 billion in revenue, with the tournament’s prize fund accounting for about 6.5% of the expected total income.
