Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón has officially captured the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Glove after a historic defensive campaign that powered La Roja to the world championship.

The 29-year-old Athletic Club shot-stopper kept seven clean sheets across eight tournament games, conceding only once to help his country defeat Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final.

Simón entered the tournament under intense media scrutiny as fans demanded he be benched for Arsenal’s Premier League title winner David Raya.

However, manager Luis de la Fuente stood firmly behind his number one, and Simón rewarded that faith immediately.

During Spain’s 3-0 Round of 32 victory over Austria, Simón surpassed Italy’s legendary Walter Zenga by logging 519 consecutive scoreless minutes across two World Cups. He extended his historic shutout streak to 649 minutes through the Round of 16 against Portugal before finally being beaten.

The only player to breach Spain’s impenetrable defense all summer was Belgium’s Charles de Ketelaere, who scored a first-half equalizer in the quarterfinal tie. Simón remained unfazed by the lone blemish, shutting the door on Belgium for the remainder of the match to secure a -1 victory.

Simón subsequently blanked Kylian Mbappé and France 2-0 in the semifinals before grinding through a grueling 120-minute final against Lionel Messi’s Argentina. A 106th-minute extra-time goal by Ferran Torres sealed the championship, capping off the most dominant defensive run in World Cup history.
