OpenAI has announced a major upgrade for ChatGPT’s free users, removing limits on text-based conversations and introducing a new “Think” button designed to improve responses to complex queries.
The update comes as ChatGPT surpasses one billion weekly users, marking one of the platform’s most significant feature rollouts to date.
Under the update, GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users, replacing the current GPT-5.5 model.
OpenAI said the rollout will begin this week, with unlimited text chats and the new Think button becoming available to Free users from next week.
The Think button allows users to ask the AI to spend more time reasoning through complex questions before responding. However, existing usage limits for file uploads, image generation, voice conversations and image analysis will remain unchanged.
For paid subscribers, OpenAI is launching GPT-5.6 Sol, a more advanced model aimed at improving everyday tasks such as answering questions, web research, writing, planning, decision-making and providing advice.
Plus and Pro users will also receive a new Thinking Slider, enabling them to choose how much reasoning the AI should apply based on the complexity of a task.
OpenAI noted that the GPT-5.6 Sol model available in ChatGPT is different from the versions used in its Codex and Work products.
According to OpenAI’s internal evaluations, the new models deliver significantly higher factual accuracy than the previous GPT-5.5 Instant model.
The company said factual errors have been reduced by 62% in GPT-5.6 Luna and by 68% in GPT-5.6 Sol.
GPT-5.6 Sol is already available to Plus and Pro subscribers, while GPT-5.6 Luna and unlimited text chats for Free and Go users will be rolled out gradually over the coming week.
