Ferrari’s first fully electric vehicle has sold for a record $40 million, or around Tk 4.9 billion, at a charity auction in California.
The price is more than 35 times the car’s regular value, setting a new record for the highest price ever paid for a new car at auction.
The auction was organised by RM Sotheby’s in California, US. The special model, called the Ferrari Luce, is the first production version and features a striking white finish, customised brakes and special wheels.
The five-seat battery-powered car was designed by Sir Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief designer.
It was unveiled in May and faced some criticism, with detractors arguing that its electric powertrain and five-seat design did not fit Ferrari’s traditional identity.
Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and former Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo also criticised the model.
Despite the criticism, the car attracted huge interest at the auction. The identity of the buyer has not been disclosed.
The previous record for a new car sold at auction was set in 2025, when another special Ferrari fetched $26 million. The Luce has now surpassed that record.
