Uber to cut 3,300 jobs in global restructuring

Global ride-sharing company Uber plans to cut around 10% of its global workforce, or approximately 3,300 jobs, as part of a major restructuring aimed at reducing management layers and increasing investment in its ride-hailing, delivery and robotaxi businesses.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the decision in an internal email to employees on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the planned layoffs.

As part of the restructuring, Uber plans to reduce the number of managers by around 20%, with some managers being moved into individual contributor roles.

The company will also reduce the number of small teams consisting of only one or two employees by about 50%. The layoffs will affect positions across the organisation, including roles that are seven or more levels below the CEO.

Uber is also planning to reorganise several business units. Its engineering, science and delivery divisions will be merged, while its restaurant, retail and direct delivery operations will be brought under a single organisational structure.

The company is also significantly tightening its remote-work policy. Under the new arrangement, fewer than 1% of employees will remain eligible to work fully remotely.

In his email, Khosrowshahi said Uber had launched new services, expanded its business and become a larger and stronger company, but that the growth had also increased organisational complexity.

He said additional management layers had emerged and coordination had become more difficult, adding that the administrative structure that worked when Uber was smaller was no longer suitable for the company’s current size.

The restructuring comes as Uber seeks to streamline operations while directing more resources toward key growth areas, including its core ride-sharing and delivery businesses and the development of autonomous vehicle services.

The job cuts represent one of the largest workforce reductions at Uber in recent years and underscore the company’s effort to improve efficiency while preparing for the next phase of growth.
