Meta has unveiled “Muse”, a personal artificial intelligence agent designed not only to answer questions but also to perform tasks on behalf of users.
The AI agent is designed to actively help users achieve their goals, offer recommendations and independently carry out tasks when necessary.
Meta said Muse has been developed with a strong focus on safety and privacy. It will operate inside a dedicated virtual machine called “Muse Secure VM”, where the agent and user data will be stored securely.
Users will be able to interact with Muse through the Muse app or directly through WhatsApp, much like messaging another person.
To assign a task, users simply need to tell Muse what they want done. It will then use Meta’s “Muse Spark” model to begin working. Meta describes Muse Spark as its most capable model so far for real-world agentic tasks.
How Muse Works
Unlike many other AI agents, Muse is designed to be accessible to people without technical expertise. It can handle everyday tasks such as sending emails and booking travel, while also helping users achieve more complex goals.
Once given a goal, Muse can create a personalised plan, coordinate the necessary time and resources, and proceed with the task on its own. It can open browsers, fill out forms and even negotiate on behalf of users.
If a task takes time to complete, Muse can continue working even after the app is closed. If circumstances change or approval is required before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase, it will return to the user for permission.
Muse can also help users achieve better results with less effort, such as selling a car at a higher price, negotiating a lower bill or adjusting a training plan as their circumstances change.
Muse for Online Shopping
During online purchases, Muse will be able to use Stripe’s “Link” payment service. Meta said Muse is the first AI agent covered by Link’s purchase protection features.
These include protection for damaged or lost items, price-drop benefits, returns without additional fees and return guarantees on eligible purchases.
Link’s agent wallet will generate a single-use card, keeping users’ actual card details hidden. Meta said support for Shop Pay as another payment option and 1Password for using existing logins will also be added soon.
Muse will remember important information about users, allowing it to provide recommendations without requiring them to repeat previous instructions.
For example, it could turn a recipe saved from an Instagram Reel into a shopping list, suggest a menu for a dinner party and take guests’ dietary restrictions into account before sending invitations.
Security and Privacy Measures
Meta said personal AI agents require a new approach to secure computing and has therefore developed Muse Secure VM with additional privacy and security measures.
Muse will run on a dedicated computer in the cloud, isolated so that another user’s agent cannot access it. Information from users’ connected services and authentication data will also be securely stored there.
A separate agent called “Sentinel” will operate on the same computer while remaining isolated from Muse at the system level. Muse will not be able to access the internet unless Sentinel authorises the action, and it may require the user’s permission when necessary.
Muse will not have access to users’ passwords or payment methods. Authentication information shared with the system will be stored securely so Muse can use it without directly viewing the information.
Before sensitive actions such as sending emails or making purchases, Muse will request user approval. It will also provide a full audit trail showing what it has done and what it plans to do next.
Users will decide which apps Muse can connect to and what level of access it receives. For email, for example, users can choose whether Muse can only read messages or also send emails on their behalf.
Access can be changed or a service disconnected at any time. Users will also have the option to prevent their conversations with Muse from being used to train Meta’s AI models.
Meta said Muse will not share users’ conversations or information stored in their virtual machines with its advertising systems. Users will also be able to ask Muse to forget specific information it has stored.
By the end of this year, Meta plans to introduce “Muse Confidential VM”, which will encrypt the entire virtual machine—including user data and conversations—with a key held only by the user. This would mean even Meta could not access the information.
Availability
According to Meta, Muse is being launched in the United States on iOS, Android and Muse.ai. It will also be available on AI-powered glasses soon.
Muse will be free for most essential tasks, while subscription plans will offer access to additional features.
Meta said personal superintelligence could significantly transform people’s lives in the future, describing Muse as an initial step toward allowing AI to take on more responsibilities so people can focus on what matters most to them.
