Google’s AI assistant Gemini can now make phone calls on behalf of users through a new feature called “Call for Me.”
The feature can call restaurants to book tables, contact shops to check product prices or availability, and call businesses to change appointment times.
Gemini can handle automated phone menus and speak with staff when needed. Users do not have to wait on hold if there is a long queue.
Users can type “@Call for me” in the Gemini app and give instructions. They can add details such as the date, time and preferences.
Before making the call, Gemini shows the phone number it will call and the information it plans to request. The call starts after the user gives permission.
Users can see a live transcript and hear the conversation. They can also stop the call and take over at any time.
The feature has some limits. Gemini cannot call emergency services, make payments or share sensitive information such as passwords.
“Call for Me” is currently an experimental feature. It is available to selected users aged 18 and above in the United States.
Google initially launched it for Pixel 11 series phones and users with paid Gemini subscriptions. There is also a daily call limit, and calls can currently be made only to US phone numbers.
Google said real-world phone calls can vary widely. It has therefore launched the feature on a limited basis while it continues to improve the technology.
