Banglalink launches Starlink-powered mobile service

Banglalink has launched a satellite-to-mobile service powered by Starlink, making Bangladesh the first country in South Asia to introduce the technology, the mobile operator said.

The service will allow Banglalink customers to stay connected in areas beyond the reach of conventional mobile networks, including remote and coastal regions and deep-sea areas within Bangladesh’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The service is expected to be particularly useful during emergencies, natural disasters and prolonged power outages when conventional networks may be disrupted.

It will also benefit fishermen, people working at sea, travellers and residents of remote areas.

Customers will need only a 4G-enabled phone and a Banglalink SIM to use the service. They will be able to access essential apps and location services even outside conventional network coverage.

Banglalink is offering Starlink connectivity at no additional cost with any internet or mixed bundle pack during the first month.

From the second month, the service will remain free with selected monthly internet and mixed bundle packages.

Customers will also receive five free SMS messages each month over the satellite network.

Banglalink CEO Johan Buse said the service would bring connectivity to more people and places across Bangladesh, particularly those beyond the reach of traditional mobile networks.

Starlink is operated by SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk.

Banglalink received approval from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) last month to launch Starlink Direct-to-Cell services.
