Standard Chartered Bangladesh and UK Export Finance (UKEF), the United Kingdom’s export credit agency, jointly organised a high-level roundtable in Dhaka to explore ways to strengthen the UK-Bangladesh trade corridor and accelerate diversification of Bangladesh’s exports.
Representatives from Standard Chartered Bangladesh, the British High Commission in Dhaka, UKEF and leading businesses from sectors including pharmaceuticals, light engineering, agribusiness, seafood and footwear attended the roundtable.
Participants exchanged views on opportunities and challenges in the Bangladesh market and discussed how trade finance and export credit could help businesses expand investment, improve production capacity and access new markets.
The discussion also focused on the practical application of UKEF-supported financing, the structure of export credit facilities and how a pipeline of projects could be developed in line with Bangladesh’s development priorities, including infrastructure, sustainable development and industrial modernisation.
Enamul Haque, chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Bangladesh, said the bank had been a partner in Bangladesh’s development journey for more than 120 years.
“As Bangladesh enters a new phase of development, it is important to deepen trade and investment ties with strategic partners such as the UK. Through today’s roundtable, we are reaffirming our commitment to connecting Bangladesh with the world and the world with Bangladesh,” he said.
“By working closely with UK Export Finance, we can bring world-class UK-based expertise, technology and investment to our clients,” he added.
The UK and Bangladesh have longstanding and important economic ties. The roundtable provided UKEF representatives with an opportunity to hear directly from government and business leaders about market needs and identify areas where UK expertise and financing could support innovation, growth and development.
With its long presence and deep experience in Bangladesh, Standard Chartered aims to become a key partner of UKEF in the country.
The bank will work to connect Bangladeshi corporates, financial institutions and government agencies with UK suppliers, technology and capital. Such collaboration could support export diversification, adoption of high-quality UK goods and services, business modernisation and productivity improvements in line with international standards.
As a long-term partner in Bangladesh’s development, Standard Chartered has supported the country’s evolving trade and investment landscape for more than 120 years. Through strategic partnerships with institutions such as UKEF, the bank is working to accelerate sustainable growth, support diversification of exports and supply chains, and strengthen Bangladesh’s position in global trade.
