Production at Jamuna Fertilizer Company Limited in Sarishabari, Jamalpur, has been suspended again, just two days after the plant resumed operations following an eight-month shutdown caused by a gas shortage.
The factory restarted urea production early Monday after receiving adequate gas pressure.
However, a leak developed in its boiler early Thursday, forcing production to stop, officials said.
Fazlul Hoque, head of the factory’s production department, said the problem was likely caused by the plant remaining shut for a prolonged period.
Other machinery at the factory remains operational, and repair work is underway. Officials hope to resume production after fixing the boiler.
The factory produced around 1,600 tonnes of fertiliser during the two days after restarting, although it had not reached full production capacity.
Jamuna Fertilizer has an installed capacity of 1,700 tonnes of urea per day.
However, low gas pressure and mechanical problems have reduced its practical output capacity to around 1,200–1,400 tonnes a day.
The plant had remained shut for 23 months from January 2024 to November 2025 due to gas shortages and technical problems.
Production halted again on February 12 this year because of another gas crisis.
The factory supplies fertiliser to 21 districts through around 1,900 dealers listed with the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC). Under normal gas supply, it can produce fertiliser worth about Tk200 crore a month, with an estimated profit of around Tk60 crore.
