Prices of early winter vegetables and fish have risen in Dhaka markets over the past week, while chicken prices have remained unchanged, according to a market survey on Friday.
A visit to Shewrapara, Taltola and Agargaon markets on October 9 found that early winter vegetables had become Tk10–20 more expensive per kilogram despite adequate supplies. Fish prices had also increased by Tk20–50 per kg following the suspension of hilsa sales from October 8.
Among winter vegetables, beans were selling for Tk160–200 per kg, new potatoes for Tk200, radishes for Tk60 and cauliflower for Tk60–80. The price of radishes rose by Tk10 per kg over the week. Small cabbages were selling for Tk80 apiece.
Prices of several summer vegetables remained stable. Pointed gourds, okra and snake gourds were selling for Tk70–80 per kg. Eggplant prices fell by Tk20 to Tk60–120 per kg, while green chillies dropped by Tk20 to Tk100–120 per kg.
Tomatoes, however, were selling for Tk240 per kg after rising by Tk100, amid reduced supplies. Olives were priced at Tk60–80 per kg and carrots at Tk100–120.
Papaya was selling for Tk15–20 per kg, potatoes for Tk30 and onions for Tk50–55. Taro stems cost Tk80 per kg, taro roots Tk50–60, cucumbers Tk70–80, yardlong beans Tk60–80 and pumpkins Tk40–50.
A four-piece set of lemons cost Tk30–40. Local coriander leaves were selling for Tk300 per kg and hybrid coriander leaves for Tk240. Four green bananas cost Tk40, ash gourds sold for Tk60–70 apiece, and capsicum was priced at Tk350 per kg.
Chicken prices remained unchanged from the previous week. Sonali cock chicken was selling for Tk320 per kg, Sonali hybrid chicken for Tk290, red layer chicken for Tk360, broiler chicken for Tk180 and local chicken for Tk670.
Leafy vegetables were also available at different prices. Red amaranth cost Tk15 per bunch, bottle gourd leaves Tk50 per bunch, water spinach Tk20 for two bunches, Malabar spinach Tk40 per bunch and stem amaranth Tk40 for two bunches.
Beef was selling for Tk780–800 per kg, while mutton cost Tk1,300 per kg.
Fish prices rose across the markets after hilsa sales were suspended on October 8. Farmed shing fish was selling for Tk350–600 per kg, while local shing cost Tk1,200–1,400. Rui was priced at Tk400–550 per kg, local magur at Tk900–1,200 and mrigal at Tk350–450.
Farmed pangas was selling for Tk180–220 per kg, shrimp for Tk800–1,400, boal for Tk650–800 and large katla for Tk350–500. Poa fish cost Tk400–450 per kg, pabda Tk450–500, tilapia Tk220–240 and koi Tk220.
Other varieties included mola at Tk500 per kg, batashi tengra at Tk1,400, tengra at Tk600–800, kachki at Tk500 and mixed small fish at Tk240–260.
A dozen chicken eggs were selling for Tk150–155, while a dozen duck eggs cost Tk200. Four local chicken eggs were priced at Tk100 and four Sonali cock eggs at Tk70.
