Biman Bangladesh Airlines on Wednesday signed an agreement with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus to acquire 10 aircraft as part of its long-term fleet expansion and modernisation programme.
The agreement covers four A350-900 wide-body aircraft and six A321neo narrow-body jets.
The A350-900s are expected to serve long-haul international routes, while the A321neos will be used mainly on regional and medium-haul routes.
Airbus India and South Asia President and Managing Director Jürgen Westermeier and Biman Board Chairman Rumee A Hossain signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations at a ceremony in Dhaka.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir witnessed the signing.
The deal marks a major step in Biman’s fleet expansion strategy and will introduce Airbus aircraft into the national flag carrier’s future jet fleet.
Biman has already agreed to acquire 25 Boeing aircraft under two agreements signed this year. The addition of the 10 Airbus aircraft takes the airline’s planned long-term acquisition pipeline to 35 jets, including 19 wide-body and 16 narrow-body aircraft.
The expanded fleet is expected to enable Biman to increase capacity and expand its network across long-haul, regional and medium-haul routes.
