PANCHAGARH: State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad today said India must prove its friendship with Bangladesh by renewing the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty and ensuring an equitable share of water for Bangladesh.

He expressed hope that renewing the treaty with a guarantee clause and ensuring equitable water sharing from the 54 common rivers between the two countries would demonstrate India’s commitment to friendly relations with Bangladesh.

The state minister made the remarks while inspecting the construction site of the Second Karatoya Bridge over the Karatoya River in the Mirgarh area of Panchagarh Sadar upazila.

He said renewing the Ganges treaty with a guarantee clause would help resolve controversy over India’s support for Bangladesh and establish India as a true friend.

Officials and staff of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), District BNP Convener Zahirul Islam Kacchu, and District Jubo Dal President Ferdous Wahid Russel and General Secretary Nuruzzaman Babu were present during the visit.

The Second Karatoya Bridge will be constructed at a cost of Tk 203 crore. Later, the state minister distributed leaflets among traders at different locations in Panchagarh town, highlighting alleged irregularities and corruption during the previous Awami League government.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the bridge project on October 7, 2026. The project aims to connect Bhajanpur in Tetulia upazila with Mirgarh in Panchagarh Sadar upazila.
