More than 620 drones were reportedly launched overnight at Moscow and surrounding areas, according to Russian officials.
The attack is being described as one of the largest Ukrainian drone assaults targeting Moscow in recent years.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defence systems shot down 180 drones over the capital region between Monday evening and 5am Tuesday. Another 17 drones were destroyed while approaching Moscow.
Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported that it was the largest drone attack targeting Moscow in the past two years.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said on Telegram that three people, including a 10-year-old child, were injured in the attacks. Pavlovsky Posad district suffered the most damage, with one house catching fire. Several other houses and a guesthouse were damaged in Bogorodsky district.
A warehouse belonging to e-commerce giant Wildberries in eastern Moscow was also damaged. The company said debris from a drone struck the building’s wall, causing minor damage to its logistics complex.
Ukraine has targeted several Wildberries warehouses in recent weeks. Kyiv has alleged that the company supplies components used in the production of Russian drones.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Air Force said 111 of 147 drones launched by Russia overnight were shot down or intercepted.
Oleh Syniehubov, governor of Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, said five people, including a nine-year-old child, were injured in overnight Russian attacks on the city of Izium.
In Brovary, Kyiv region, Russian drone strikes also caused fires and damaged several buildings. Mayor Ihor Sapozhko said an office building and several warehouses were among the damaged facilities.
As frontline fighting has largely stalled and peace talks remain deadlocked, both Ukraine and Russia have significantly intensified their long-range attacks. The escalation has resulted in rising civilian casualties.
According to the United Nations, 437 civilians were killed in Ukraine in July alone, the highest monthly civilian death toll since May 2022.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities said 79 civilians were killed in Ukraine’s attacks on Russia in July, up from the previous month.
