South Korea said Friday it was considering contributing to US security efforts in the Strait of Hormuz, provided any involvement did not compromise its military readiness. However, Seoul stressed that no decision had been made.
A South Korean presidential official said potential contributions could be managed within limits that would not affect the country’s military readiness.
The presidential office later clarified that references to possible military roles—including combat participation, non-combat duties and search operations—were only general descriptions of available options. “Nothing has been decided yet concerning actual contributions,” it said.
The comments came a day after local broadcaster JTBC reported that the government was leaning toward sending troops to Hormuz and was reviewing details before seeking parliamentary approval.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly urged South Korea to assist US efforts to secure the strategic waterway, saying Seoul had rejected his request.
The development comes as the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran has reached an impasse, with Iran maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz while Washington continues its counter-blockade of Iranian ports.
