At least nine US military aircraft were damaged in an Iranian missile strike on a US airbase in Jordan, with an A-10 Thunderbolt suffering severe damage, Reuters reported, citing CBS News.
According to CBS News, citing sources familiar with the incident, Iranian missiles struck Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan early Wednesday, damaging around eight F-15 fighter jets. The aircraft sustained minor damage and were later repaired and returned to service.
An A-10 Thunderbolt, also known as the Warthog, was seriously damaged, with one of its wings broken.
The attack came a day after the United States said it had destroyed five Iranian oil tankers following an alleged Iranian attempt to attack a US warship.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it had attacked eight oil tankers, two warships and the US airbase in Jordan. The claims could not be independently verified.
CBS News reported that US forces in Jordan fired more than 30 Patriot missiles to intercept Iranian missiles and other projectiles.
Jordan’s military said 18 of the 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iran were intercepted, while two landed in unpopulated areas.
