Five people were killed and several others injured in a shooting at a youth centre in the northern German town of Stade on Monday, police said.

Authorities have arrested two people, including one identified as the suspected gunman, according to a police spokesperson. Investigators have not yet disclosed the ages of the victims or the possible motive behind the attack.

Police said the situation is under control and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

A large-scale emergency response was launched following the shooting, with police, paramedics and other emergency personnel deployed to the scene. Officers have urged residents to avoid the area while investigations continue.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and officials are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Stade, a town of around 50,000 residents located west of Hamburg in northern Germany, has been cordoned off around the affected area as forensic teams examine the crime scene.

Authorities said further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
