North Korea has fired nearly a dozen short-range ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan, South Korea’s military said on Thursday (October 29).
According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were launched from the Wonsan area of North Korea. Officials are examining their flight distances and other technical characteristics.
South Korea’s military said it had stepped up surveillance following the latest launches and remained alert to the possibility of further missile tests. It is also maintaining a strong defence posture through information-sharing with the United States and Japan.
Earlier, Japan’s Defence Ministry said that North Korea had launched what was believed to be a ballistic missile.
Meanwhile, Japan’s Coast Guard urged vessels operating in Japanese waters to monitor further updates and advised them to stay away from any missiles or debris that might fall into the sea, Japan’s Kyodo News reported.
North Korea also fired multiple ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan from the Pyongyang area on October 12.
The successive launches have heightened concerns over the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and in the surrounding region. Source: Agencies.
