US midterm elections underway today

Americans are voting today in the midterm elections, with opinion polls showing Democratic candidates leading their Republican rivals ahead of the crucial contest that will determine control of Congress.

The elections, scheduled for November 3, will decide all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate.

The vote is being closely watched as a major test of President Donald Trump’s leadership and the performance of his administration during the first half of his second term.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released ahead of Election Day showed Democrats leading Republicans by 46 per cent to 38 per cent on the generic congressional ballot, an eight-percentage-point advantage.

The rising cost of living, economic concerns, immigration and the US-led war with Iran have emerged as key issues shaping voters’ decisions.

Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress. Democrats are seeking to regain control of the House and Senate, which could significantly affect Trump’s legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency.

However, national polling does not necessarily reflect the outcome of individual constituency races, particularly in closely contested Senate contests.
