New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and said his place is in The Hague, where the International Criminal Court (ICC) is based.

Mamdani made the remarks in an interview with a US media outlet amid the possibility of Netanyahu visiting New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

“Benjamin Netanyahu is someone who faces allegations before the International Criminal Court, and his place is in The Hague,” Mamdani said.

Asked whether the New York Police Department (NYPD), which operates under the mayor’s authority, has the legal power to arrest a foreign leader such as Netanyahu, Mamdani said he was not certain.

He added that his administration was actively consulting New York’s legal department on the matter.

The ICC previously issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged crimes linked to the Gaza conflict.

Israel has rejected the allegations and the court’s jurisdiction.
