UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate end to attacks on civilian infrastructure amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran.
Guterres is “deeply concerned by the continuing and expanding military escalation” between the two countries over the past several days, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.
The crisis has already affected Iran, Bahrain, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, Dujarric said.
Guterres is particularly alarmed by attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran, including a nuclear power plant under construction and a desalination facility.
He is also concerned about strikes targeting power and desalination plants in Kuwait and elsewhere.
“Such attacks are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” Dujarric quoted the UN chief as saying.
The UN has repeatedly warned that attacks on essential civilian infrastructure could further widen the regional conflict and deepen the humanitarian consequences of the escalating confrontation.
