A court in Jamalpur on Wednesday sentenced a father and his two sons to life imprisonment for the murder of a seven-year-old boy in Sarishabari upazila in 2011.
The convicts are Abul Kashem, 65, and his sons Mokaddes Ali, 40, and Swapan, 36, all residents of Maguriapara village in Sarishabari.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nezam Uddin delivered the verdict in the murder case.
The court also sentenced each of the three convicts to an additional five years in prison for destroying and concealing evidence related to the crime.
Additional Public Prosecutor Mohammad Didarul Islam Didar said the incident stemmed from an altercation between the accused and their neighbour, Shabuja Begum, over the collection of jackfruit leaves in Maguriapara on September 3, 2011.
During the dispute, the accused allegedly assaulted Shabuja Begum. When her brother-in-law, Babul Mia, intervened, he was also attacked. Local residents later stepped in and separated the two sides.
Shortly afterwards, Babul Mia’s seven-year-old son, Suman, went missing.
Despite extensive searches, the child could not be traced. A general diary was filed with Sarishabari Police Station on September 4.
The following morning, the boy’s body was recovered from the Jhinai River near Chaparkona Bazar, close to his home.
Babul Mia later filed a murder case with Sarishabari Police Station, naming five people as accused.
Following an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against three of them.
The court delivered the verdict in the presence of the convicts after considering the testimony of 25 witnesses and other evidence presented during the trial.
