The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board has warned that continuous heavy rainfall and upstream hill runoff could trigger short-term flooding in at least 12 districts across the country.
In its latest forecast issued on Wednesday after reviewing weather conditions and river levels, the FFWC said heavy to very heavy rainfall is highly likely over the next two days in northern, northeastern and adjoining upstream regions.
As a result, water levels in major rivers, including the Surma, Kushiyara, Teesta and Dudhkumar, are rising rapidly. The agency warned that low-lying areas along rivers in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Netrokona, Sherpur, Jamalpur, Bogura and Mymensingh districts may be inundated, leading to temporary flooding.
According to the forecast, the Kushiyara River is already flowing above the danger level at the Fenchuganj point in Sylhet. Officials said water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are expected to rise further over the next 72 hours, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj.
The Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram may also reach or exceed danger levels, posing a flood threat to riverside communities across the Teesta basin.
The FFWC said water levels in rivers in coastal and hilly areas may rise sharply for a short period but are expected to recede quickly.
The centre said it is continuously monitoring rainfall and river conditions both within Bangladesh and in upstream regions. Local authorities and residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Officials are closely monitoring river levels and coordinating preparedness measures, adding that the flood situation is likely to improve rapidly once the spell of very heavy rainfall subsides.
