A petrol bomb was hurled at the ancestral home of former Bangladesh cricket captain and former lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan in Magura on Wednesday night, triggering a fire at the entrance of the residence.
The attack took place at around 8:45pm in the Keshabmor area of Magura town. According to police and local sources, the explosive struck the upper portion of the iron gate, igniting a blaze. Local residents quickly extinguished the flames, preventing major damage to the house.
Witnesses also reported that unidentified attackers hurled bricks at the residence, damaging several windows before fleeing the scene. Police later visited the site and launched an investigation.
Magura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Al Mamun said investigators were examining the incident and could not immediately confirm whether the explosive was a petrol bomb. He added that the exact circumstances would be determined after the investigation.
The incident occurred hours after Shakib took part in a media interaction addressed by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, a development that several reports noted preceded the attack. However, authorities have not officially established any motive or identified those responsible.
