CHENNAI: Sangeetha, the wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor C Joseph Vijay, has withdrawn her divorce petition before the Family Court in Chengalpattu, bringing the current proceedings to an end without any ruling on the merits of the case.
According to an order passed by the Chengalpattu Family Court, Sangeetha appeared through video conference and told the court that she no longer wished to pursue the divorce proceedings initiated earlier this year.
“The petitioner appeared through video conference and confirmed that she does not wish to proceed further with this case. She has filed the withdrawal petition,” the court recorded.
The court noted that notice of the withdrawal petition had been served on the counsel representing the respondent and that there was no objection to the request. It subsequently allowed Sangeetha to withdraw the case while giving her liberty to initiate fresh proceedings in the future, if necessary.
“The petitioner is permitted to withdraw this case with a liberty to file a fresh petition in future, if required. Hence, this petition is allowed,” the court said.
Court records have since shown the case status as “Uncontested – Withdrawn.”
The withdrawal means that the present case has ended without the court examining or deciding any of the claims or allegations contained in the original petition. The court order also does not provide any reason for Sangeetha’s decision to withdraw the proceedings.
The development comes several months after reports emerged that Sangeetha had approached the court seeking dissolution of her marriage to Vijay. The case attracted considerable public attention because of Vijay’s prominent career in Tamil cinema and his subsequent entry into politics.
According to reports on the original petition, Sangeetha had cited allegations including infidelity, mental cruelty and emotional neglect as grounds for seeking divorce.
She reportedly alleged that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female co-star and claimed that the alleged relationship caused her emotional distress and undermined marital trust.
The petition reportedly stated that Vijay had initially assured her that the alleged relationship would end but that it continued despite those assurances. Sangeetha described the situation as causing what she characterised as mental cruelty, emotional neglect, public humiliation and constructive desertion.
She had reportedly claimed that the marriage had become irretrievably broken and sought dissolution of the marriage. The petition also included claims relating to permanent alimony and residential arrangements.
However, none of these allegations was adjudicated by the court. With the petition now withdrawn, they remain allegations and should not be treated as judicially established facts.
Vijay and Sangeetha married on August 25, 1999, when Vijay was still establishing his career in Tamil cinema. Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil, has largely maintained a low public profile despite Vijay’s rise to become one of the industry’s leading actors.
The couple have two children, son Jason Sanjay and daughter Dhivya Sasha.
Their private life has generally remained outside the public spotlight, although speculation about their relationship intensified in 2025 after Sangeetha was reportedly absent from a major event associated with Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Her absence fuelled speculation on social media about a possible separation, but there was no official confirmation of marital problems at the time.
The divorce petition filed earlier this year subsequently brought the couple’s personal affairs into public focus, particularly after Vijay’s transition from cinema to politics.
The latest court order, however, provides no indication of the couple’s current personal circumstances. It only confirms that Sangeetha has chosen to withdraw the present divorce proceedings.
The court’s decision to grant liberty to file a fresh petition means that the legal option remains open to her should she decide to pursue the matter again in the future.
For now, however, the divorce case before the Chengalpattu Family Court has formally come to an end.
